A 20-year-old man died early Tuesday after falling from a rocky cliff edge along West Rim Drive in Crater Lake National Park, officials said Wednesday.
The Florida man had scrambled down inside the caldera just west of Rim Village, according to a National Park Service news release that did not identify the victim because his family has not yet been notified. The incident occurred at about 5:45 a.m.
Witnesses said the victim walked onto a rocky point when rocks he was standing on broke loose, the news release said. He fell about 50 to 70 feet.
Rangers rappelled down the cliff and confirmed the man had died, the release says. The incident is under investigation.
