A 62-year-old man is receiving medical care after a chase and standoff at a national park on Thursday.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a campground near Badlands National Park to check on a 62-year-old man. When they arrived, he was spotted driving away.
After a 9-mile pursuit, the man stopped his vehicle at a scenic overlook. A deputy and park ranger saw that he was holding a gun to his head before he suddenly drove away.
At the Pinnacles Overlook, the man got out of his vehicle while still holding a gun to his head. Dozens of tourists were cleared from the area and after 30 minutes of negotiations, the man put down the gun.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man did not threaten anyone and no one was hurt. He was sent to a local hospital for treatment. The case is still under investigation and criminal charges are possible.
