On Thursday, July 13th, an unresponsive hiker was extracted by helicopter from the vicinity of the Eagle Peak Trail in the Tatoosh Range of Mount Rainier National Park. The victim showed no signs of life and was released to the Pierce County Medical Examiner.
The hiker separated from his group of four around 1:30 pm to travel cross-country. At approximately 2:30 pm several parties observed rockfall in the area which was reported to the park at 4:30 pm. The victim was unresponsive when located in the rockfall by aerial search.
In my reading about deaths in National Parks, taking short-cuts, going off-trail, often occurs shortly before disaster. Very sad.
